Brushes of light, canvas of air. Artist Julien Breton, aka Kalaam, creates dreamy photographic light paintings of Arabic script. Set against carefully chosen backdrops, Kaalam’s art uses light and photography to make Arabic script appear as if it’s floating in air.

His work is part photography, part choreography – he rehearses smooth, slow movements, sweeping different kinds of light through the air. A long photographic exposure then captures the movement of the light, which traces the curve and embellishments of Arabic script.
